Threads of Time
We were delighted to be part of the opening of the Hastings Embroidery exhibition at Hastings Town Hall on Friday 4 September, joining celebrations marking the town’s place at the heart of the 1066 story.
Hastings Alumna Dida Condria performed Threads of Time, a specially improvised piece created in response to the Hastings Embroidery and its extraordinary story — from 1066 through different eras of English life. Dida’s performance offered a musical response to the intricate stitching and the stories captured within its 27 panels.
Created by the Royal School of Needlework in 1966 to mark the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, the embroidery’s 27 panels depict 81 events from British history, creating a striking continuation of the Bayeux Tapestry story.
The private opening included short speeches by John Stokes of the British Museum, Cllr Glenn Haffenden, Leader of Hastings Borough Council, and Cllr Julia Hilton, Deputy Leader of Hastings Borough Council and Lead Councillor for Regeneration, Shaping Places and Community Wealth Building.
Other guests included MP Helena Dollimore, members of East Coast College who helped with the installation of the exhibition, and representatives from Hastings Museum & Art Gallery.
The exhibition is on display at Hastings Town Hall until Sunday 1 November, open Thursdays to Mondays.
