Time: 6:15pm
Location: Hampshire House,150 Central Park South NY 10019
“An aristocratic sense of shape and forward propulsion... Suddenly the piano had become a full orchestra with an extraordinary range of sounds. The inevitable drive to the final three chords reminded me of the animal excitement that Rubinstein would suddenly unleash...”
— Christopher Axworthy Music Commentary
2024 prizewinner Derek Wang lives in New York and holds BA and MA degrees from the Juilliard School in New York where his teachers included Sir Stephen Hough, Yoheved Kaplinsky and Matti Raekallio. He was awarded second prize at the 12th International Liszt Competition in Utrecht and first prize in the inaugural New York International Liszt Competition. He is forging a career as a pianist and communicator, as a soloist but also as a chamber musician particularly in the realm of contemporary music.
We’re thrilled that Derek has agreed to give an intimate recital at the New York home of our patrons David & Sarah Kowitz. His fascinating programme includes music by both Robert and Clara Schumann, Couperin, Ravel, Beethoven and Charles Ives.
“Consummate virtuosity... moments of almost unbearable simplicity in the slow movements... a variety of touch and tone that was pure poetry”
— Seen and Heard International
“But the keyboardist Derek Wang deserves special praise. Game for anything, he played piano, harpsichord and synthesizer with equal conviction and enviable idiomatic rigor.”
— The Wall Street Journal
